About Instinctual Acting

Our Story: Born From Passion, Built for the Camera

Instinctual Acting was founded by Michael Duvall, an American actor, director, and coach with a bold vision: to create a screen-focused acting school that values emotion, instinct, and authenticity above all else.

With experience both behind and in front of the camera, Michael built IA as a response to the rigid, theatre-centric training models offered by traditional acting schools. What began as a handful of workshops has now evolved into a full-fledged training institution known for its hands-on approach, small class sizes, and deep emotional work.

Over the last decade, our students have gone on to feature in short films, gain professional credits, and secure Spotlight listings, making IA a trusted stepping stone for serious actors looking to build real-world experience.

Our Unique Approach to Acting

We don’t just train actors, we train listeners, responders, and storytellers. Our method draws on:

  • Images, colours, music, and sounds from everyday life to unlock instinctive reactions.

  • The power of memory and emotion to bring truth to the surface.

  • A present-moment awareness that transforms each performance into something real and resonant.

This philosophy is informed by the world’s most influential acting masters (Stanislavski, Meisner, Uta Hagen, Chekhov, Strasberg, Stella Adler, and Harold Clurman) whose work we respect and evolve through a modern, camera-first lens.

After completing our comprehensive 3-year program, students receive a Diploma in Acting and become eligible for Spotlight registration, with tailored support and references from our team.

Our Values and Vision

We exist to help actors find their truth, and bring it to screen.

  • Authenticity: We create space for raw, instinctual performance.

  • Accessibility: Our flexible schedule and open-door policy welcome students from all backgrounds.

  • Professionalism: Students learn from working directors, casting agents, and filmmakers with real-world experience.

  • Creativity: From writing their own scripts to auditioning for in-house short films, students are encouraged to express themselves fully.

Vision: To become the UK’s most respected destination for instinctual screen acting training, known for emotional depth, industry access, and powerful performances.
