Fight

A Word on Acting by Michael Duvall

What does the word "fight" mean? We have it in the sporting world, like boxing. We have it in gangs on the streets of cities all over the world. We have it in wars between countries, where the result is either death, surrender, or quitting. The acting world is the same; it’s a fight. In boxing, you fight to beat your opponent in 10 rounds. Well, in acting, you fight other actors for roles. You are up against casting directors, producers, and directors, and most of all, yourself. The main opponent is yourself. You look across the ring and really see yourself. Should I fight another round? Should I keep going? Should I take another beating of defeat? You say to yourself, why? Well, the answer is simple: because it’s in your heart to show the world who you really are. Just like in sports, you hear cheers, you hear the praises, you get recognition. You start to believe in yourself. Unlike boxing, the fight goes on forever. You fight every day, and every day there is a new rival, meaning an audition for a part. The work really begins. You prepare for the fight to get that role. You go through the script, every detail, what to wear, how to deliver lines. Then you step out into the ring and perform, and bingo, you get the job. You win the fight. But remember, this is the beginning. You will need to work hard on the role for the production. You see, the fight in the acting world is like life, and it’s all about survival. The result of this fighting will leave you with a feeling of accomplishment, a feeling of success. Most of all, you come out a winner of the fight. And also, remember the opponent on the other side is really you. You must beat the negatives of that side of you, and you will always be a winner of the fight.
